The November 2024 Fresher to Thriver (F2T) Workshops were conducted on 11th November at the Shahe Campus. The series of workshops provided first-year students with an exciting and intellectually demanding opportunity to utilise Generative AI (GenAI) tools in their learning across real-world applications, including time management, embedded system design, and interactive web page development.
The day began with an opening address by Professor Michael Chai, who reflected on the success of the F2T initiative and awarded prizes to the winners of the September 2024 F2T workshops, along with the QM F2T team, setting a motivating tone for the day.
The “Mastering Time with GenAI” session, led by Professor Yue Chen, empowered students with essential time management skills through techniques like the Eisenhower Matrix and Pomodoro. Students explored diverse time management styles and learned prompt engineering tips to harness the power of GenAI tools. A highlight was the interactive group activity, ‘Help Jack to plan his week’, where students applied their new skills to create personalised schedules. The session provided practical tools to boost planning, organisation, and productivity, equipping students for success in both academics and beyond.
The "GenAI-Assisted Embedded Systems Application Design" workshop, led by Dr. Jonathan Loo, offered students an exciting introduction to embedded systems design using the ESP32 microcontroller and MicroPython programming. Despite the inherent technical challenges, students were guided through incremental hands-on tasks, such as setting up the ESP32 and writing basic MicroPython scripts. Leveraging GenAI tools for debugging and code optimisation, students not only tackled programming challenges but also explored various ways to enhance hardware functionality. The session equipped students with foundational skills in hardware programming and demonstrated the potential of GenAI to streamline learning and development in engineering disciplines.
The "GenAI-Assisted Interactive Web Page Development" workshop, led by Dr. Vindya Wijeratne, provided students with an engaging introduction to web development. The session began with foundational concepts, guiding participants through the creation of basic HTML forms. Students then explored adding interactive features using JavaScript and implementing validation techniques to enhance functionality. With real-time support from GenAI tools, participants debugged their code and optimised design elements, learning practical skills for building user-friendly web applications. The workshop showcased the synergy between traditional programming and AI assistance, equipping students with essential web development expertise and innovative problem-solving techniques.
As with previous F2T workshops, these sessions embraced the ‘learning by doing’ principle, encouraging students to actively engage in group activities. Through collaboration with peers, interaction with academics, and hands-on use of GenAI tools, students developed their critical thinking, problem-solving, and soft skills.
The November 2024 F2T workshops exemplified the initiative’s dedication to challenging students to step beyond their comfort zones while equipping them with the practical tools and adaptable skills needed to thrive in an ever-evolving technological landscape.
